Arizona Vs. Buffalo

November 19th, 2009

Cardinals -1 vs Bills

While most people look forward to exiting the desert, the Arizona Cardinals are looking forward to returning to it. It has been a long time since the Cardinals have been at the University of Phoenix Stadium and they have certainly taken their lumps along the way.

In Week 3, the Cardinals (2-2) were riding high after their victories over San Francisco and Miami to start out the year.  Most people assumed that the Cardinals would continue their assault and start the season 3-0 for the first time since they were in St. Louis. Of course, the Cardinals being the Cardinals, this did not happen.  They ran into a Washington Redskins team with a large chip on their shoulder and ran into their first loss. Coach Ken Whisenhunt took the unorthodox approach of remaining on the East Coast following the Washington loss because of last Sunday’s matchup against the New York Jets in East Rutherford, New Jersey.  Saving a cross country trip home and back again would make sense, especially in these economically depressed times, but apparently Whisenhunt’s players did not appreciate the gesture as they allowed an amazing 6 touchdown passes to a previously uninspired Brett Favre in a 56-35 loss to the Jets.

Following the Cardinals west are the unbeaten Buffalo Bills (4-0). The Bills 31-14 come from behind throttling of the Rams cost St. Louis Coach Scott Linehan his job. Keeping the Rams plight in mind, it was perhaps Buffalo’s most complete and convincing victory of the season or at least since the season opener against Seattle.  It would seem that quarterback Trent Edwards statistics have gotten better in each game this season, something that is likely to increase against Arizona’s mediocre defense.  Buffalo’s concern going into this week is the health of cornerback Terrence McGee, who injured his knee in the Rams’ game and whose status is still up in the air.

Perhaps the Cardinals grew tired of hotel living and yearn for home cooking. They won their only home game this season convincingly over the Miami Dolphins, who would later dispatch the Patriots and were 6-2 at home last season.

Travel Destination – Buffalo Bill Ranch Historical Park, Nebraska

November 11th, 2009
Travel Destination – Buffalo Bill Ranch Historical Park, Nebraska – N.A. Rubin

The park features the home and ranch of the famed showman scout William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody, Buffalo Bill Ranch at North Platte that recaptures the life and career of the famed Pony Express rider, Army scout and buffalo hunter turned showman through artifacts and written documents

William Frederick Cody (1846-1917), American hero, was his real name, but before his interesting life was over everyone knew him as ‘Buffalo Bill’. He was one of the most colorful characters of the Old West that is recorded in the Hall of Fame.

Cody was born in Iowa, but in his early years his family moved to the State of Kansas moving into a large log cabin on land that they had staked there. Later, through contacts, at the age of fourteen, Cody became a rider for the Pony Express riding hard the trails to deliver the US mail. Cody got his nickname because of his work as a buffalo hunter for the railroad building the first transcontinental railroad. Buffalo Bill, as he was called at that period, claim to have killed 4,2890 buffalo in on eighteen month period. (Despite his image as a rough-hewn outdoorsman, Buffalo Bill pushed for the rights of the Native Americans. In addition, despite his history of killing bison, he even supported their conservation by speaking out against hide-hunting and pushing for a hunting season

He served as an army scout in various campaigns against the Native Americans during the next four years. For a while, Buffalo Bill toured eastern cities as an actor in a play about scouts of the Wild West, but his performances didn’t draw in the audiences so he returned a bit older and wiser in 1876 to scouting, a work he was cut out. A series of popular books were written about his adventures; they were among the first ‘dime novels.

Buffalo Bill hankered to return back to show business and in 1883 he formed his own group, the famous ‘Wild West Show’, which appealed to the audiences in the Eastern cities of the USA. It was an immense success, featuring amongst the cowboys and Indians in a Wild West display, Annie Oakley, a woman sharpshooter, and the famous Indian Chief Sitting Bull. The show traveled to all the Eastern Coast and crossed the Atlantic to thrill audiences in European cities. Audiences were thrilled by demonstrations of trick riding, sharp shooting, and fake Indian battles with plenty of whoops and simulated scalping. But the main attraction was Buffalo Bill who was always the center of attraction in the performances. His beard, white hat, and fringed leather jacket became symbols of the western frontier of the United States during that period of history.

To understand life of the man called ‘Buffalo Bill’ one should visit the home of famed showman and buffalo hunter north at La Platte, Nebraska. The house was built during the Cody’s profitable venture, the Wild West Show, and money was not spared by him in its construction and furnishing and of maintaining the surrounding ranch. The park encompasses twenty-five acres of the of the original 4,00 acres that Cody owned; Buffalo Bill’s Ranch, known as Scout’s Rest, became a state historical park in 1965. Since then, the house and barn have been restored and a wealth of Cody memorabilia has been acquired and placed on display. ‘http://www.ngpc.state.ne.us/parks/guides/parksearch/showpark.asp’

NOTE

1) Outside of interest in viewing the historical park one can enjoy the facilities of the Buffalo Bill State Recreation Area located next to the site. This recreation area offers beautiful camping along the Platte River; the recreation area also offers fishing, picnic tables, fire rings, and hiking trails

2) Cody died of kidney failure on January 10, 1917, surrounded by family and friends at his sister’s house in Denver, Colorado. 4 Enormous Seasons for the New York Giants and the Big Apple

November 10th, 2009
For over 80 years, the New York Giants have represented the Big Apple, in a big way. Since 1925, the team has played in five stadiums, won three Super Bowls, had 27 pro football Hall of Famers, and retired 11 players’ jersey numbers. There have been several memorable moments in over eight decades of Giants history. While it is quite difficult to define ONE as most memorable, several of them are certainly noteworthy:

1. 1925 Season

According to reliable sources, Tim Mara bought the Giants for $500. Mara was a businessperson and promoter. At the time, the NFL (and subsequently the Giants themselves) was struggling. However, the Giants encountered a huge turning point during their first season. On December 11th, the Giants faced the Chicago Bears. Roughly 70,000 fans watched the game live! The Giants would split a two-game series with the Bears, ending the season with a record of 8-4.

2. 1986 Season

During the previous season, the Giants had lost to the Chicago Bears (21-0) in the NFC championship game. This season, they were ready to stomp the competition! The Giants completed the regular season with an outstanding 14-2 record. In the playoffs, they demolished the San Francisco 49ers (49-3), and then blanked the Washington Redskins (17-0). In Super Bowl XXI, the Giants nearly doubled the Denver Broncos score (39-20). Coach Bill Parcells’ “Gatorade Bath” completed the Giants’ larger-than-life season.

3. 1990 Season

The Giants played yet another solid season, ending with a 13-3 record. After losing their starting quarterback, Phil Simms, everyone wondered how deep the Giants would proceed in the playoffs. Quarterback Jeff Hostetler answered. The Giants demolished the Chicago Bears (31-3), and then edged the San Francisco 49ers (15-13), after adding Joe Montana to their list of Quarterback casualties. Super Bowl XXV was another tight game, with the Giants sneaking past the Buffalo Bills (20-19).

4. 2007 Season

While the Giants started on rocky ground, they soldiered out the season, ending with a 10-6 record. In the playoffs, the Giants sank the Tampa Bay Bucs (24-14), defeated the Dallas Cowboys on an endzone interception in the final play of the game (21-17), and then edged the Green Bay Packers in OT (23-20). In Super Bowl XLII, the Giants faced the New England Patriots, who were attempting to complete a perfect season-literally. Tom Brady and the Patriots had become renowned for winning close games in the Super Bowl. However, it was the Giants’ QB, Eli Manning, who delivered on his team’s last drive of the game. Scoring with 39 ticks on the clock, the Giants won their third Super Bowl trophy. The 1972 Miami Dolphins remained the only unbeaten team in the history of the NFL.

The New York Giants have had enormous seasons throughout their history. Certainly, their Super Bowl victories have been in some of their most memorable seasons. Giants fans hope that their favorite NFL team will earn more NFL championships. Use New York Giants merchandise to cheer on the team to another gargantuan season!

Lets Go Buffalo Bills Tailgating Part 2

Part 2 of the Crazy antics seen only at the Number 1 Rated Tailgating Parties in Buffalo , New York

Stock Certificate From Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Company Goes for $20,000 at R. M. Smythe & Company Winter Stock & Bond Auction

October 29th, 2009
Manhattan, New York – February 21, 2008 – The February 6-7th, Winter, Stock & Bond Auction at R. M. Smythe & Company (#277) saw heated bidding that was typified by the sale of a featured stock certificate from Buffalo Bills Wild West Company, which saw a final hammer price of $20,000. The beautifully illustrated certificate featured a portrait of Buffalo Bill at top center. Other noteworthy sales that warmed the winter auction included:

Lot # 1396 (Presale Estimate – $15,000-25,000) Final Bid – $19,000

Accessory Transit (of Nicaragua) (NY) 1856. #12. $5000. Bearer Bond. Auxilliary ocean going steamship. Signed twice by Cornelius Vanderbilt as president, and on the reverse. Not cancelled. John W. Amerman. NY. VF.*

Cornelius “The Commodore” Vanderbilt (1794-1877) was an American financier and founder of his family’s fortune. At the age of 16 he bought a boat and ferried passengers and goods between Staten Island and Manhatten. He later made a fortune in the steamship business, earning himself the nickname “Commodore.” In 1862 he sold his ships and turned to financing railroads, where he amassed a greater fortune estimated at $100,000,000 making him one of the richest men of his time. Accessory Transit was organized by Vanderbilt to move passengers and freight to the West Coast through Nicaragua. Vanderbilt hired C.K. Garrison as his agent through San Francisco, and Charles Morgan as his agent in New York.

Shortly after this bond was issued came the “war of the three commodores,” between Charles Morgan, Cornelius Vanderbilt and George Law. Accessory Transit competed openly with the Law-Aspinwall mail subsidy line. Morgan and Garrison, on the other hand, manipulated the Transit’s stock in such a way that they profited while Vanderbilt lost heavily. Vanderbilt is said to have stormed at them, “I will not sue you because the law takes too long. I will ruin you.”

Vanderbilt did manage to unseat Morgan and Hoyt from the board of directors, but another headache immediately developed in the form of William Walker, who invaded Nicaragua with the support of Morgan and his Associate! William Walker made himself President of Nicaragua. In order to get the money needed to keep a 1200 man army together, he took sides in the in-fighting within Accessory Transit Company. Foolishly backing those who had double crossed Commodore Vanderbilt, Walker confiscated the company assets and handed them over to the insurgent faction. Vanderbilt retaliated with a blockade, cutting Walker off from reinforcements while inciting the neighbouring states. Vanderbilt sent mercenaries to Costa Rica, where they obtained a small force of native troops to attack Walker. As a result Walker suffered defeat and had to flee in May 1857. Vanderbilt was then back in business with Nicaragua.

The first Accessory Transit Certificate signed by Cornelius Vanderbilt that we have sold in over a decade, a museum quality certificate that may not be obtainable again in a lifetime of collecting.

Lot # 1083 (Presale Estimate – $1000 to $1500) Final Bid – $1800

Black Star Line (DE) 1919. #2153. 5 shs. Green. Eastern Hemisphere globe with the title “Africa The Land of Opportunity” flanked by a field hand and an ocean liner. Signed by Marcus Garvey as president. VF.*

Marcus Garvey (1887-1940) was convinced that African Americans could not prosper in countries where they were the minority race, Garvey urged a “Back to Africa” movement, and conceived of a steamship trading company trading between New York, the West Indies and Africa. Over a half million in subscriptions poured in, but the enterprise never materialized. Garvey was arrested, convicted of mail fraud, and deported to Jamaica.

Lot# 1092 (Presale Estimate – $500 to $1,000) Final Bid – $1400

Chesapeake & Ohio Canal (MD) 1838. #12. 2500 shs. People stroll along the Canal and the Potomac River at left. Signed as corporate president by George C. Washington (1789-1854), grand-nephew of George Washington, congressman and Indian treaty negotiator. Tape stain center, otherwise VF.*

This enterprise was chartered in 1828, in succession to the old Potowmack Company. Half of the six million in capital came from the States of Maryland and Virginia as well as the cities of Washington, Georgetown and Alexandria. Although John Quincy Adams turned the first spade, the undertaking was not a success. A change of plan widening the canal made it impossible to finish the work within the constraints of the capital. By the crash of 1837, all of the $8 million had been spent and the canal was still 50 miles from Cumberland. In the meantime, President Jackson had to repeatedly call out the militia to restore order among the quarrelsome and striking workers.

Finally, in 1850, way over budget, the canal reached Cumberland, whose coal mines at least offered a commercial product that could be carried to Washington. The company ran at a profit from 1860-1880, with the exception of 1877 when a great flood on the Potomac wrecked the works. The company got back on its feet, but the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad steadily drained away its business. It lingered until 1924, when another great flood destroyed the works and made reconstruction financially impossible. The Federal government bought the land as a park in the 1930’s.

Lot# 1116 (Presale Estimate – $600 to $900) Final Bid – $950

Lewis & Clark Centennial & American Pacific Expo & Oriental Fair (OR) 1904. #1656. One share. Green. Large gold embossed corporate seal with an image of a settler and Indian pointing to a map of the Louisiana Purchase. “Where Rolls The Oregon” ships in harbor. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on either side. Nicest we have seen. Extremely Rare. VF+.

This exhibition was held in Portland, Oregon, in 1905, to commemorate the anniversary of the famed Lewis and Clark expedition from St. Louis to the Pacific Coast, which charted a route to the West through the Rocky Mountains.

Lot# 1209 (Presale Estimate – $2,000 – $4,000) Final Bid – $2600

Estate of Alexander Hamilton (NY) Nov. 29, 1804. $200. Printed form. Signed as trustees by Gouverneur Morris (1752-1816) patroon, Morrisana, diplomat and US senator. He was a member of the Continental Congress and one of the three drafters of the Articles of Confederation. Also signed by Rufus King (1755-1827), Revolutionary soldier, Continental Congressman, US senator from NY, twice a US senator, unsuccessful Federalist candidate for President in 1804 (thus at signing). Another signer was Oliver Wolcott, Jr. The other signers were Robert Benson and Thomas Wilkes. Framed behind glass with an engraving of Gouverneur Morris. Not examined out of frame, but appears to be EF.

Issued just four months after Hamilton’s famous duel with Vice President Aaron Burr. Hamilton was brilliant at getting the affairs of the United States in order, but he allowed his own personal finances to fall into complete disorder. The four gentlemen who signed this certificate formed a committee to liquidate Hamilton’s assets in order to try to save something for Mrs. Hamilton and the children.

Prices were generally much improved and autographed items and rare pieces did exceptionally well. None of the prices listed here include the Buyers Premium.

Week 5 Player Rankings

October 28th, 2009
Quarterbacks

Tony Romo vs CIN. Was thinking about downgrading Romo after losing last week by throwing constantly, but they face the Bengals this weekend, so that means that the Cowboys will throw AND run constantly.

Drew Brees vs. MINN. Drew just keeps posting monster numbers with no-name receivers. They face the Vikings this week in Prime Time. Minny has been notoriously tough to run against and notoriously easy to pass against. Good thing Brees is a pocket passer.

Peyton Manning at HOU. Coming off a much-needed Bye week and facing a Texans secondary that has been thinned greatly by injury gets Manning right back near the top of the charts. If Dallas Clark is healthy and the tried-and-true hook-ups with Marvin return, Manning could continue upward.

Philip Rivers at MIA. Rivers will continue to fill the air on a weekly basis thanks to the Chargers finally having a receiver set to run with Gates and to take the pressure off of LT. Facing the Dolphins makes life a bit easier as well.

Donovan McNabb vs. WASH. Brian Westbrook is expected back, but I am anticipating more swing passes than rushing attempts for him. Philly has a chance of getting Kevin Curtis back as well. The ‘Skins secondary is vulnerable.

Kurt Warner vs. BUF. With Warner in the line-up, the Cardinals will continue to throw two out of every three downs. Even if Boldin sits this one out, Fitz and Breaston should be enough for 250-300yds and a couple of TDs.

Jay Cutler vs. TB. A tough matchup for Cutler, but Denver is a throwing team now and has too many WR weapons not to expect 250yds and a pair of scores.

Trent Edwards at AZ. Edwards faces the same pass defense that Favre shredded last week. Now, he is many grades behind Favre, but, with the likes of Lee Evans and James Hardy lining up, Edwards should see 250yds and at least 1 TD.

Kyle Orton at DET. Orton makes his Top 10 debut since the Bears playbook has opened up a bit and he is facing a horrific Lions defense.

Matt Schaub vs. IND. The Texans are now finding success through the air with Walters, Johnson and Daniels. Indy should put enough offensive pressure on Houston for the Texans to try to match them score-for-score.

Running Backs

Adrian Peterson at NO.
With no passing game and a desperate need to keep Brees off the field, the Vikings will run the hell out of AP. Triple digits and 2 TDs is a given.

LaDainian Tomlinson at MIA. He won’t be getting 30 carries a game anymore, but 20 carries will be enough to net 100 yards, but it is his 2-3 TDs that will really ring the points up for LT owners.

Marion Barber vs. CIN. After "resting" Barber against the Redskins by only giving him the ball 8 times, expect a radical change this week with triple digit results and 2 TDs.

Frank Gore vs. NE. Gore won’t come close to Ronnie Brown’s performance against the Pats, but the Niners will give him the ball over 20 times and Gore runs much better at home.

Marshawn Lynch at AZ. Lynch has to stop here this week, which would be the only other thing stopping him this week other than a coach that wants to limit his touches and not burn him out too early this year.

Joseph Addai at HOU. Addai looked good in his last game after being dinged up the week prior. The Bye week and a weak Houston defense are his friends, especially if Manning is tearing apart the Texan secondary.

Matt Forte at DET. The Lions have the worst run defense in the league. The Bears will first exploit the Lions defense through the air and then will pound out a victory by letting Forte have his way. They even may sit him in the 4th qtr with the game in hand to let Kevin Jones have a shot against his former team.

Clinton Portis at PHIL. A very tough matchup this week for Portis, but he has been way too good to expect him not to produce 75 yards and a score.

Earnest Graham at DEN. Graham’s stats have been padded with a couple of nice, long runs this year. If you saw Denver’s ole’ defense on Larry Johnson last weekend, one could easily foresee another long run coming this week.

Steve Slaton vs. IND. Indy was easier to run on before the break than a 7-11 before a hurricane. I doubt much has changed since, though I feel that this game will get out of hand early and the Texans will rely more on the passing game.

Wide Receivers

Terrell Owens vs. CIN.
I gave him this slot last week and there were too many missed connections with Romo that prevented him from earning it. However, to return to happness, they will tear apart the Bengals for some huge numbers this weekend.

Reggie Wayne at HOU.

I see all Colts WRs having a big day against this Texan secondary, but Wayne will undoubtedly go for well over 100 yards and 1-2 scores.

Brandon Marshall vs TB. The TB D will be keying on Marshall which is enough to step him down to 90 yards and a TD.

Steve Smith vs. KC. Ahhhh, it was nice to see Steve Smith back to form last week. What a beautiful catch and run for his TD. I’m sure we’ll see something similar this week.

Larry Fitzgerald vs. BUF. AZ most likely will not have Boldin in the line-up, but Fitz seems to do better when not being the main focus of Warner, plus Buffalo will blitz the hell out of the turnover-prone QB. We’ll probably see 90-100 yards, but I’m not sure about a TD.

Santana Moss at PHIL. Moss has quite the rhythm going with Jason Campbell. If Campbell gets some time to throw, Moss could be in for another nice game.

Lee Evans at AZ. Nice to see Evans back to his big-play form, which is exactly what the Cardinals are good at giving up. Randy Moss at SF. One has to believe that he has to have a big game this weekend or he will check out for the remainder of the season.

Chris Chambers at MIA. Chambers returns to face the Dolphins and you know he is looking forward to sticking his success in their face. By the way, do catches get much prettier than the juggling catch he had against OAK last Sunday?

Santonio Holmes at JAX. Big Ben and Holmes found their rhythm in the second half of MNF and it helped the Steelers win. You have to feel that they will try the exact same approach this week against a Jags secondary that is very beat-up.

Teams on Bye: New York Jets, Oakland, St. Louis, Cleveland
